Objectives:
The Advanced High-Performance Computing Center (NACAD) at COPPE/UFRJ is a laboratory specialized in applying high-performance computing to engineering and general science problems, as well as other fields of knowledge.
NACAD's activities focus on three main lines:
- - Research and development conducted by NACAD's team of researchers and users of its high-performance computing services;
- - Computational support for groups of faculty and researchers from different programs at COPPE, UFRJ, and other institutions in the State of Rio de Janeiro and other states;
- - Human resource development through regular graduate and undergraduate courses, short courses on specific topics, and specific courses related to the use of NACAD equipment.
NACAD is an integral part of SINAPAD (National High-Performance Computing System), constituting its Specialized Engineering Service Laboratory.
History:
Since 1988, COPPE has been developing high-performance computing activities in hardware and software, supported financially by FINEP, as well as other sources such as CNPq, FUJB, and companies in the productive sector.
This initiative, one of the pioneers in the country, resulted in the construction of parallel machine prototypes as well as the generation of application software in important areas of engineering.
Due to this experience and the organization of the National High-Performance Computing System (SINAPAD), the High-Performance Computing Center (NACAD) at COPPE/UFRJ was created in February 1995, with the installation of the CRAY EL94 mini-supercomputer and 12 SUN Sparc 20 workstations. NACAD operates on the premises of the I2000 Complex at the UFRJ Technology Center. The NACAD installation project received support from FINEP and is an integral part of SINAPAD, along with the other National High-Performance Computing Centers (CESUP/UFRGS, CENAPAD/SP-UNICAMP, CENAPAD/RJ-LNCC/CNPq, CENAPAD/NE-FUNCEME/CE, CENAPAD-AMB, CENAPAD-MG/CO).
